TRAINING CONTENT AND MANUAL ORGANIZATION

This manual encapsulates years of coaching training under different paradigms and methodologies. It has been organized for a variety of approaches and is expected to be adapted to different contexts and applications.

This training was crafted with adult education in mind. It is not supposed to create a classroom environment but a laboratory where the participants can explore what it means to go from pastoring skills (which often lean toward mentoring) to coaching skills. This manual’s organization is an attempt to capture this nuance.

It is assumed that this resource is used in conjunction with a Participant’s Manual and a slide deck. See How To Use This Guide for more information.

You will notice a two-column approach to most sessions.

((CHECK )) The left column utilizes systematic verbiage around the subject matter. It is a line-byline approach for trainers who prefer a straightforward style, and it captures the most important points for each session.

((CHECK )) The right column presents more insights and postures for the trainer. This may appeal to the more intuitive trainer who approaches the subject with less structure and more flexibility.

((CHECK )) By using the columns together, the trainer should be well-equipped to train others on everything covered in these pages.

((CHECK )) There are also QR codes throughout—these link to videos that are either part of the training itself or show examples of how the session has been approached by another trainer. If you desire to use the videos for your training, it is encouraged that you save them to a hard drive instead of accessing them on the cloud (this would be a best practice for the manual and slide deck as well).

This manual and the corresponding slide deck is not to be shared outside of City to City Trainers. It is only for City to City events.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This manual is designed both to help the trainer learn how to train and to be used in actual training sessions. Using these materials should produce the ability to introduce Christian leaders to the basic skills of coaching and foster a sense of self-awareness in how both trainers and leaders impact other people.

It is assumed that the trainer has completed City to City coach training, has effectively coached leaders, and has been commissioned by City to City to train coaches. None of the material in this manual should be new to the trainer, but this resource presents the next step in equipping them to train others. Furthermore, each trainer should have an assigned Master Trainer to assist in the process of honing their training skills.

The following sessions each have a list of materials needed and timelines in which to cover the subject. These are based upon current training experiences and may need to be adjusted to cultural needs.

((CHECK )) Please note, there is a Participant’s Manual that corresponds to this Trainer Manual. Familiarize yourself with the Participant’s Manual thoroughly enough to refer to it effectively in your training.

((CHECK )) Trainers should also note that there is a slide deck for each session, but the manual intentionally does not include information on where to place the slides, so the trainer can implement slide placement based upon their unique preference.

Large amounts of blank space are provided to make notes and markers to cue each section.

The CROWN coaching method is implemented in this manual, but you can adapt the material to CROSS, GROW, UBUNTU, etc. It is assumed that each trainer will contextualize this training to their unique coaching methodology.

This manual and the corresponding slide deck is not to be shared outside of City to City Trainers. It is only for City to City events.
